What i do....
Heres my method,
1. Record movies from hbo latino on my replaytv
2. Transfer movie (.mpg) to my computer (using dvarchive or WiRNS)
3. Rip the Spanish closed captioning and convert to a subtitle file using ccextractor (the transcript exactly
matches the audio with perfect timing)
4. Use subtitle edit to translate subtitle file into English (this program uses goggle translate) and then
combine the English and Spanish subtitles.
5. Automatically convert movie to an mp4 (for ipod/iphone) using dropfolders in conjunction with handbrake.
6. Load movie and subtitle file into iphone app using file sharing.(i use av repeater and dictplayer)
7. End result is a movie that has exact transcript with a translation. When using dictplayer i can swipe right
to get to the next spoken line, and swipe left to repeat the current line. When using av repeater there is a
mode where it will play each spoken line one after another. This allows for automatically skipping non
spoken parts of the movie. Here is a youtube video of me using dictplayer...

That is very impressive. How long does it take you to make one such episode?

I use handbrake to rip videos to my ipad - and just doing that takes quite a while. Your
process clearly takes much longer, and your patience is admirable, but the results with
bilingual subtitles sound excellent. Plus, you just introduced me to dropfolders, for
which I am most grateful. Thanks.

@splog, Really, the process is streamlined. I press one button on my replaytv, it records the show at the
time its on, when it finishes recording it automatically downloads it to a folder on my computer, dropfolders
automatically senses this new file and automatically transcodes it to an iphone ready video. The closed
captioning ripping takes 5 minutes and then about five more to load up on my iphone (its fast using itunes
file sharing rather than syncing (which sucks). I wish tivo didnt follow the copy once flags set by hbo,
because the replaytv doesnt but the replaytv is becoming obsolete.

I've been trying to get subtitles for a Turkish show (Ezel) that I'm watching, but there
isn't any. This is a great method IMO, but sometimes the subtitles are hard to obtain.
