Everybody has to learn the kanji together with the vocabulary they learn. RTK doesn't eliminate any steps.

Why "instead"? If an RTK user wants to learn etymology, she would learn etymology. And mnemonics aren't harmful, so I have to disagree.

Every step requires grunt work, some of which having learned RTK helps reduce. To put it another way, RTK reduces the total time required in

There are statements in your post that, if one believes them, would apply to RTK at any time, not just upfront.

I did RTK early on, but I did not learn the jouyou kanji before I did any other work on Japanese.
