Hi,
It's been a goal of mine to learn another language and so I'm going to try and go for
it and see how I get on. I 'learn't' German at school but didn't really get into it and
memorized my way to a 'C' and forgot nearly everything soon as I left the exam room.
This will be my first time teaching myself a language and i'am unsure as to what the
best plan of attack is. Also, what resources i should use. Don't want to commit too
much money in case I lose interest or something more important comes up.
I think Spanish will be the language I choose to learn, although Italian was the other
on my list. I think Spanish would be more useful and likely get more use although I
probably prefer Italy as a country.
So, what should my plan be in terms of % listening, grammar, Vocab etc etc and what
(free, if possible) resources are available. I've heard of FSI but how do I get that
downloaded onto itunes? I can only play it on the internet and can't find option to
download.
Thanks for any help.

Have a look at this page. Seventh item down is a report which shows a collection of free Spanish resources on the net.

Hi John310,
My suggestion is to read over those language learning logs here in which people are also learning Spanish. In the early posts, most people tend to list the materials and/or approaches that they are going to use. Then as they go along, they may comment on what is working or not working and make adjustments. I would give more weight to logs that are about learning Spanish, and Spanish only, because many of the people learning multiple languages simultaneously have a lot of skills under their belt already that I couldn't even hope to emulate.

I am a Spanish native speaker.
One thing I have found useful while learning a language is to connect your interests
with the target language. For example I took English classes at school, and then at a
language institute, but I actually did not use my English skills outside the classroom.
But one day I wanted to read manga (japanese comics) but most of the japanese manga I
found were only in English, so I started reading manga in English. At first it was
difficult (I could not past 3 pages of shoujo manga without getting a headache), but I
really liked the mangas I was reading, and I wanted to know how the stories in those
mangas would continue to develop, so without noticing it, I improved a lot my English
reading skills, and just a few months later I could read more than 10 chapters in a row
(for shonen manga thats about 17 pages per chapter, and for shoujo it is around 30 or
40 pages per chapter).
Well, thats my advice from my own experience. I hope it helps you ^_^!
