Hello,

Possibly a strange question, but has anyone ever tried speeding up the material they
listen to in a foreign language in order to improve their listening skills? With
Audacity you can change the tempo of a sound file without making it high-pitched, for
example. It's just that I remember back in the early days of learning Spanish that I
often struggled to understand Spanish on the radio (even though I didn't have any
obvious vocabulary problems) just because I couldn't process what was being said
quickly enough. I don't have that problem any longer, but I wonder if I might have
overcome it more quickly by doing some intensive listening to material I already knew
at a faster pace.I'm learning Chinese this summer, so I might experiment with idea and
report back.

Cheers,

Alex.

I've done it, and written about it on this forum. I find it helpful, within reason. How much faster I can make audio while keeping it comprehensible varies a lot on the audio, but 20% or 30% faster tends to be ok; experiment.

Also, if you haven't tried listening while you read transcripts, give it a try.

I also have done this with several audiobooks that started to sound too slow with repeated listening. I found it quite helpful.

You can do this in Windows Media Player too without altering pitch. Go to View->Enhancements->Play Speed Settings and you can slow it by up to a half or increase the speed up to double.
