After my first day in Poland I'm inclined to move Polish there, but I have to see how the rest of the trip goes. The most awkward circumlocutions always make you feel better about your skills than a correct guess based on your native language.
And I'm really hoping that German will be the next, but I've been hoping so since 2001... (apart from the 1.5 years of hoping Finnish would be the next)
Italian might be easier if I manage to go to Italy later this year, as I'll probably read far more in it.

I'm curious. What language do people, and especially the polyglots, reckon will be their next to move from studies to speaks ? i.e. Basic Fluency. For myself, I'm hoping to get French to Basic Fluency by the end of the year.

For me, German and Spanish are most likely. Of all my target languages, these are they only one I think I'm somewhat able to use. But they need to be activated (and upgraded).

After almost three years of Spanish classes I've not managed to get any further than beginner stage, so it would be amazing to reach basic fluency by the end of 2013.

Though I know I won't be speaking it very well, my goal is to advance as much as possible in Mandarin this year.
Right now I am a very beginner, and I know less than 75 characters. I would like to be able to pass the HSK A-level
test by the end of the year (800 characters) and have basic conversations!

Its a hard subject for me to have a concrete answer for... Im always proud of how far Ive come in my language,
however I know realistically I can always know more, and keep studying to become more fluent in whatever language
it is...
but the short answer is japanese... its my favorite language, and the one thats most incorperated into my daily life

Russian, Russian, Russian!!! I harbour the hopeful notion that if I say it aloud 3 times, it will really happen this year... ;)
