Nobody seems to have mentioned the advantages of the non e-ink kindles. With a kindle fire you can watch films, listen to music, easily surf the net, and use android apps like Anki. Oh, and you can use it for skype as well.

I have an older Kindle keyboard, and it is fantastic for reading. But I'm looking forward to using the Kindle fire HD I'm buying for my daughter for her birthday. I'm planning to watch a lot of French films with the free month subscription to Love Film, and extend that subscription if it turns out they have a lot of foreign films I want to see.

@gumbril: you can install many different language dictionaries as the default dictionary on a Kindle. That means you click over a word and get the definition at the top of the screen. But (for obvious reasons) only one can be set as default at a time.

@Jeffers

Thanks! Did a little research in internet and it appears that the same is possible with a
Kobo e-reader. It requires a firmware update though, not sure I want to go through with
this.

My 2c is to buy a decent enough tablet instead of a dedicated reader.

I use my tablet almost exclusively for reading and anki, indoors, mostly at home.
I haven't picked up my kindle in years after buying a tablet.
Kindle was too small to read nonfiction, graphical works and large format pdfs.
I'd easily choose my android smartphone over my kindle now.
The only situation where I might prefer my kindle over a tablet/laptop/smartphone is reading text-only fiction at the beach on a sunny day, or as a third or fourth backup reading device when there's no possibility of charging my other devices.

Plus a tablet allows for so much more, be it gaming, web browsing, or video streaming.
Not to mention Anki, google translate, dictionaries, and other educational and language learning apps.

I prefer reading books and
articles on my Kindle, it's
screen is very book like and is
the perfect size. I have an ipad
too and I don't like the
electronic screen for book
reading it feels too impersonal.

For me the one does not exclude the other. I have a Kindle reader and an iPad. The iPad is better when it comes to displaying tables, pictures etc., plus all the other things you can do with it of course. However, if I read for a long time on a tablet, I get tired more quickly. So basically, when I read novels or non-fiction books for that matters, I prefer the Kindle reader.
