one of my favourite bands is a Swiss metal band that uses a lot of
traditional folk elements in their music, as well as traditional Celtic instruments.
They base their songs around the Helvetii, a Celtic tribe in ancient Switzerland. They
use old inscriptions from Old Gaulish in their text and sing those (they work with
Celticists for the pronunciation). Their main composer is really into folk music from
those countries. The music (apart from the one acoustic album they did) isn't for
everyone, but I find it good that a band from that kind of musical background does
something outside of the box. It makes things ten times more interesting. And this sort
of interest reflects in the music you make - but for me it reflects in the language I
want to learn.

Is that Eluveite by any chance?

I love their music :)

Yus, it is. Great live too. It explains my username, doesn't it ;)

Anyhow, endangered languages seems like a good answer to this kind of question. But it
all harkens back to two things - what you want to learn. People should do what they want
to learn. And it would be better if that reflected in our protection of endangered
languages because I know there are plenty of people out there being like "yeah I'd like
to speak Scottish Gaelic" but they end up not doing it because they are frustrated at
lack of people, resources, etc.

I totally agree with this.

I'm within 20 mile of two different Ojibwe reservations, and have decided to take up
Ojibwe this year for precisely this reason. One of the reservations also has
substantial radio programming in the language, too!

I'd also point out that when I originally took a look at the language a year and a
half ago, I couldn't find many resources. Within that time, a lot more has begun to
appear on the internet, so if it seems that a minority language isn't well
represented, that can change, sometimes rapidly.

Great stuff, Rick!

Keep us updated on that.

I haven't announced anything yet because plans are still up in the air, but when I'm done
here with Korean my aim is to head home to Australia and spend a few months in an outback
aboriginal community learning the language (and documenting it). It's very difficult to
organize but I have some contacts that are helping me.

If that falls through, my Canadian girlfriend is from a town right near a Mohawk
community in Ontario which I'd like to connect with to learn their language.

I could but that would mean that I'd have even less time for my beloved Northern Saami, no matter how long it has been since I was in and how far I am now from Sápmi :-)

@Chung

How long were you there for? Was it an immersion stay or holiday?

I was there for a few days on holiday and going there was a fulfillment of one of my dreams after having watched Kukushka with its settings and hearing Ánne Risten Juuso speak only in her native tongue.
