Does this new Assimil take into account the spelling reform of 1996? That is, is the
usage of eszett updated?

Any input on this, anyone?

@freedmo16 and @ericblair

I’m currently using L’Allemand by Maria Roemer, 2004; actually, I’m using its Italian edition: Il Tedesco – Collana Senza Sforzo adapted for Italian speakers by Manuela Benetton, 2006.

It’s the one with Lesson 1 beginning:
Quote:

Viel Glück!

Guten Tag!
Heute ist ein großer Tag.

and Lesson 50 beginning:
Quote:

Anzeigen für Ferienwohnungen

Hör mal, wie findest du das?
Wunderschöne Luxus-Ferienwohnung in Spanien zu vermieten.

And yes, they do use the neue Rechtschreibung. So you have: dass, muss, Fluss, Schloss, Schluss, wie viel, heute Morgen, gestern Abend, Rad fahren, kennen lernen, spazieren gehen, auf Deutsch etc.

I just finished the newest Assimil L'allemand course and I think it is great - for all
the fact it covers less ground than Without Toil and With Ease it covers more useful
language, has better grammar explanations, nicer voices on the recording - but about all
is much funnier and user friendly.

Hey all,
I wrote to Assimil directly about the newest German course they have for sale and
whether or not it has the new changes taken into consideration. The reply is as
follows:

"Thank you very much for your message.

This is to confirm you that our course "German with ease" don't take into account the
German reforms.

We have just changed the cover of the book.

We remain at your disposal for any further information.

Best regards.

Nathalie FROEHLY"

Now we know :)

But it should be pointed out that 'German With Ease' in the English base (which now has
a picture of a blonde woman in her 20s and a schloss on the front) is not the same thing
as their 'L'allemand - Collection sans peine' (which has a picture of a blonde girl with
a German flag painted on her cheek and liebeskuchen) in the French base. The later does
have the new spelling changes - just in case there is any further confusion.

I have found newer courses have more blank space, shorter sentences, less interesting topics and a lower new vocabulary count. For that reason I suppourt buying older more content rich materials

Hmm, maybe I can get my German up to a high enough level I can use the French based
Assimil to learn German with the proper spelling. Oh wait, that'd defeat the purpose :P

Not necessarily - after all you could use it for listening comprehension and shadowing
(ok - an expensive way to do these things, but hey!)
