How far will Assimil Dutch take me? | ||

I've heard that Assimil Dutch is one of the best courses that Assimil have ever published.
Upon completing Assimil "Dutch with Ease", what level of Dutch could I expect? Could one visit a Dutch speaking region and be immediately functional with the knowledge attained from the course, or do you think it would take more than that? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I'm currently on lesson 38. The course is very good, funny and easy to follow, but I would never reccomend it as an unique source. Meet some natives on Livemocha, talk to them on Skype or SharedTalk, watch Dutch movies, TV series, read Dutch newspapers, magazines, it all will help and improve your level.
They say you can reach level B1-B2, and probably you will, but I think the course alone, although being great, is not a good idea. 5 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I've finished the course. It's very entertaining and well put together but it's not quite as comprehensive as other
Assimil courses. Keep in mind that the audio primarily uses Flemish pronunciation. Highly recommended as long as you supplement it well with additional input. There's a follow-up course in French, "La pratique du Néerlandais", which is surprisingly comprehensive, especially for more formal/technical Dutch. I just placed an order for the new(er) French-base course, "Le Néerlandais". Looking forward to taking a look at it. I have also finished this course. Although I have not done "the second wave" (since I hate it and my primary aim was understanding and not speaking) I can understand perfectly what they say on audio recordings because I listened to them many times. But only after finishing lesson 50 of the second volume ("La pratique du Neerlandais") could I understand about 90% of news on Flemish or Dutch radio.
So I agree with fabriciocarraro that this course alone is not enough. One has to supplement it with "La pratique..." or some other more advanced course. (I believe that this also holds for the majority of other Assimil courses.) Good knowledge of German or some other Germanic language is also very helpful. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
