Could one visit a Dutch speaking region and be immediately functional with the knowledge attained from the course, or do you think it would take more than that?

Lessons 71-73 of the Dutch with Ease describe relatively good (and, as always, with a good sense of humour) what level of knowledge of Dutch a learner has already supposedly attained. Yes, you can order a beer, a room in a hotel, ask where stadhuis is, etc. That is, the basic tourist stuff. On the other hand, you won't be able to understand what people around you are speaking among themselves. Still, it's a very useful knowledge, especially if you plan studying Dutch further. If it's just for one visit, then, perhaps, Teach Yourself Dutch would be more useful and quick way to learn basic phrases.

What concerns other editions of Assimil Dutch, I have read only first 10 lessons of the first-generation one (Le neerlandais sans peine by Cherel). It contains more lessons (132) and on the whole seems to be more informative than the second generation one (by Verlee). Unfortunately, I was unable to find audio for it. And that makes it far less useful (at least for me).
I saw the third generation Dutch Assimil in a bookshop and was able only to page it through rather quickly but from what I saw it seemed to me to be less substantial than the second-generation one.

By the way, does anyone know how many generations of Assimil's La pratique du Neerlandais are there?
