I've been wanting some good French and Russian textbooks to help me out, textbooks that explain grammar well
and have a lot of vocabulary. I'm pretty basic in French and in Russian I haven't even gotten past the alphabet. Are
there any textbooks you would recommend?

There are Assimil courses for both French and Russian.

For French, there's the Liberte French Textbook , if you prefer to use a text like they use in school.

I'm just starting out in Russian, too. You might like Huliganov's Course on YouTube . That's what I used to learn the alphabet.

I'm using Teach Yourself and the Berlitz Self-Teacher right now. You'll be able to get the TYS course easily enough, but the Self-Teacher is out of print.

Bonne chance.

Hi, I've studied both of those languages myself, so maybe I can offer some advice.

For French, I've used "Chez nous: Branché sur le monde francophone". I really enjoyed this textbook because it gives a strong foundation in vocabulary and concise grammar explanation. In addition, it provides some good culture information on the francophone world, and not just France, and that was something that I really liked.

At the intermediate level, I used "Sur le Vif" by Jarausch. I didn't like this book too much because it gives a list of vocabulary in the beginning, but they are generally not incorporated into the reading passages, so there is no reinforcement. The book is also split in half, with the first half focusing on reading passages, and the second half on grammar. I personally don't like this split style.

OK, ON TO RUSSIAN.

By far, the most commonly used notebook at the beginner's level is the "Nachalo" series or the "Golosa" series (both are two books, divided into part 1 and 2. I used Nacholo for my study of Russian, so I can only comment on this. Nachalo isn't the best out there. The dialogues and reading passages are pretty good, and does teach and reinforce basic vocabularies. My biggest problem is the grammar part. It organizes grammar points in an awkward way. For example: It spreads out the declension of genetive, accusative, and prepositional case into a few chapters, but crams in all the possible instrumental ending in one tiny section. I also find it its explanations regarding verbs of motions and the perfective/imperfective aspects of verbs to be a bit lacking.

At the intermediate level, the most popular one that I know is "V puti". Sadly, I haven't been able to reach that far in my study of Russian to really use the book and comment on it.

I hope this would be helpful for you.

Do you use the new or old course? I'm around lesson 30 of the passive wave for the new course.

If you're referring to Assimil French, I'd say get both. The old one has a very steep progression, but takes you
further in terms of grammar, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.
