The class will be as effective as you want it to be.
If you use the class as your main (hopefully not only) method of learning Chinese, don't expect much.
However if you devote the same amount of time that a self learner would (around 1-2 hours a day usually) to self study courses, and use the class to supplement that, then you'll probably soar.
Considering you can ask the teacher any questions you have about Mandarin, and ask for extra assignments, ask them to help you find speaking partners and perhaps even a tutor, you'll advance at a pace far beyond someone who just learns in class or just learns at home.
Not to mention that in your class, there will be some students who are genuinely interested in Mandarin like you, and so you can become good friends and help motivate each other.
Good luck! Mandarin is a good language to have, and I'm very happy you've taken a liking to it!
