Hi,
I am new to the forum. I speak three languages (Lithuanian, Russian and English) and I am currently deciding on a fourth one to learn. I have always wanted to study Arabic; however, I know that, in order to actually converse, I'll need to know a dialect, and I also would have no opportunity to practise, other than at school. Alternatively, I have been considering French; however, whilst a beautiful language, it is spoken by many here in UK and I would like to have a language that stands out a little more. In addition, I imagine it will take more than few years to master.
So, I have arrived at Albanian - it's my partner's native language and doesn't seem to be too difficult either, which means it may not take me very long to master. Once I am done, perhaps I could move on to Arabic for pure pleasure.
My question is whether anyone on here is or has been learning Albanian as a foreign language and what do people generally think of its usefulness?

If you want a language that stands out, Albanian will certainly do that.
But apart from speaking with your partner / his family, it's usefulness would be
questionable (in comparison to French, for example, which you mentioned as the other
option).

I've been learning a bit of Albanian the last couple of months in preparation for a week long trip to Albania, which I'm on this very moment.
When is something "practical" or "useful", and does it ever need to be? Since your partner has a connection to the language, you're pretty much covered in terms of reasons, as far as I'm concerned.
Straight on to books you might use for starting out in Albanian:
Personally, I started out with a bit of the old Colloquial Albanian (Isa Zymberi), and I felt it was throwing too much at me in the beginning. After a few lessons, I started using Discovering Albanian, and found it to be pretty good. I completed the book before I went on my trip, but still have some revision left, eg. vocabulary work.
There's also a new version of Colloquial Albanian by the same author(s) as Discovering Albanian (Linda Mëniku and Héctor Campos), but I haven't seen this one yet. I'm hoping it's all new, so I can get it for some more revision etc. (PS. All these books have audio as well)
I hope you do start learning Albanian, I've found it to be quite enjoyable.

Although I have no experience with Albanian, I'd go for it.
You have someone to use it with - that's as useful as it needs to be. It may not be as widespread as Spanish, French, and Arabic, but it'll probably be worth it. Plus, if you're even just somewhat interested in the language itself, it should be even more enthralling to explore it well.
I do hope you explore Arabic later in your life, however. But if you have no way of using it right now, then there's no doubt that Albanian wins. :)
