Medulin brings up an excellent point - if you've reached a high level in Spanish and wish to transition to Portuguese, a comparative learning approach will be very helpful.
In all, definitely respect Portuguese as a separate language. As a native Spanish speaker, I find the differences fascinating, and I project that it'll be at least another year before I reach a C1+ level. Getting Portuguese just right - not just a functional level - still requires a good amount of effort. I have no doubt in my mind that Portuguese will be an interesting adventure.
