I too find it very hard to ignore subtitles in a language I read fluently. I've figured out a way to do it, but it's quite bothersome: when I consciously focus my eyes on the top of the screen the subtitles disappear into my peripheral vision, but I can still see most of what's happening. Usually it's easier to just cover them somehow.
Using subtitles effectively for language learning is a different discussion entirely. After all, it's more about not ignoring the TL audio than it is about ignoring the subtitles. In addition to the "Skim, then listen" approach, I've used another trick that I came up with when I was getting bogged down despite my best efforts: repeating the TL dialog under my breath as I read the subtitles. It forces you to listen closely, but also makes it more difficult to stay on top of the story, so I usually just skim and listen unless I'm already familiar with the content. This is why I came up with the delay thing in the first place. I figured it'd be extremely bothersome to keep reading what you already heard a couple of secs ago while being actually focused on what the actors are saying 'right now' -- OTOH it's not hard to occasionally do it if you miss some words here and there.

On Norwegian TV (NRK) you can download subtitles of their foreign programs (which cannot be seen if you're outside Norway)...
I just downloaded subtitles of Anna Karenina (a BBC show) in Nynorsk ;) —Ikkje dra, mamma. Eg vil vere med! —Neste gong. Heilt sikkert. Gå om bord, Anna. Hald opp, Serjozja. Adjø, vennen min. —Adjø! —Adjø, Anna. Dette vil nok gjere dykk begge godt. Ein bør ikkje bli for knytt til barna sine. Dolly, lukk opp! Eg må snakke med deg. Nei! Kom deg vekk! La meg i det minste få nokre klede til i morgon! After an experience I had when I was in Tunisia a few years back (Watching English TV
with Arabic subtitles), I now can't stand subtitles and prefer to watch whatever I can without them unless I actually don't understand the language. I guess it makes me feel more independent and concentrated than if I were to have subtitles on all the time. And for languages I have more trouble listening to (like Danish), it activates my brain more and makes me more focused about the conversation rather than taking the easy way out... However, for languages I don't know as well, it might be better to have subtitles to see those few words I know used in context, and then learn both the words better and more words in context... 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

I use subtitles all the time whenever they are available. I wish we had subtitled movies in TV in Poland like in Scandinavian countries... this way, I'd both know what's happening and I'd hear snippets of the original dialogue.
