Lately I've been pondering about an idea of a cooperative project in the spirit of www.book2.de which could provide us who strive to be polyglots with loads of multilingual parallel material (including audio) in as many languages as there are native speakers who are willing to participate. Book2 is great, but it is limited to essential phrases that don't take one very far. We could (in theory) build a website that could contain much more phrases with much more vocabulary. I remember there had been a similar idea (HTLAL Assimil project) that didn't exactly succeed, but I think this one could be easier to implement because we could only post and record sentences which serve to illustrate a word in context, not entire texts (which are much harder to compose).

Such site would not only be a great resource of recorded sentences in your target language that can be put into Anki or what have you, but it could also allow us to compare same sentences in as many languages as we wish, which is especially useful for closely related languages and prevention of language interference.

So, any ideas? :)

It's a great idea. I am not sure how an entire text / book would make it more difficult though. Count me in anyway.

I would certainly be interested in that and willing to record German sentences. It would be great if the project has a grammar focus (but not necessarily limited to that), so it's easy to compare how structures like modal verbs, relative sentences, etc. are built in the different languages.

Thanks for the support! Actually, it seems that this kind of project actually exists! And I happened to find it by chance a few minutes ago! There are loads of English sentences
here and they all seem to be recorded, whereas there is hardly any audio for the translations. One would think this site would be general knowledge on this forum!

So, what do we do? Do we participate in the Tatoeba project or do we make something on our own? Any ideas? :)

It's been mentioned here a few times in the past. It seems like a great project. I've
been able to find sample sentences in languages I'd not find anywhere else, like
Piedmontese, for example.

It's clear a lot of work has already gone into Tatoeba. Why not continue to help them
out?

As an aside, all the data used on Tatoeba is released under the Creative Commons
license - another huge plus, in my opinion.

I agree. The English sentences I linked to are connected with Tatoeba. What I can do to help the project is translating them into Serbian and recording them. Sure, it will take time, but when done, it will be an extremely good resource for both anglophones learning Serbian and Serbs learning English.

How do we organize and help each other with this?

as far as creating a website or portal for Language Instruction

how about creating a LIST? for grammar rules, and parts of speech that could be "universal" (not necessarily determined by one Language) sort of like using the old Dewey Decimal system to put the necessary Information into categorys.

0.0.0 pronouns
0.1.1 pronouns 1x (singular) 1st person
0.1.2 pronouns 1x (singular) 2nd person
0.1.3 pronouns 1x (singular) 3rd person
0.2.1 pronouns 2x (plural) 1st person
0.2.2 pronouns 2x (plural) 2nd person
0.2.3 pronouns 2x (plural) 3rd person

1.0.0 verbs infinitive

then conjugations would be:

1.1.0 verbs tense past
1.1.1.1 verbs tense past 1x 1st person
1.1.1.2 verbs tense past 1x 2nd person
1.1.1.3 verbs tense past 1x 3nd person
1.1.2.1 verbs tense past 2x 1st person
1.1.2.2 verbs tense past 2x 2nd person
1.1.2.3 verbs tense past 2x 3nd person

1.2.0 verbs tense present
1.1.1.1 verbs tense present 1x 1st person
1.1.1.2 verbs tense present 1x 2nd person
1.1.1.3 verbs tense present 1x 3nd person
1.1.2.1 verbs tense present 2x 1st person
1.1.2.2 verbs tense present 2x 2nd person
1.1.2.3 verbs tense present 2x 3nd person

1.3.0 verbs future
1.1.1.1 verbs tense future 1x 1st person
1.1.1.2 verbs tense future 1x 2nd person
1.1.1.3 verbs tense future 1x 3nd person
1.1.2.1 verbs tense future 2x 1st person
1.1.2.2 verbs tense future 2x 2nd person
1.1.2.3 verbs tense future 2x 3nd person

..... etc verbs information

2.0.0 nouns
2.1.0 nouns animate
2.2.0 nouns inanimate
..... etc nouns information

etc various grammatical parts of speech go here
using a decimal system so everything is categorized

by a conceptually formatted List

**

and then People can contribute Language Information within a category
and (slowly) build a grammar, Information-based Language Instruction site

Tables of Lists of whatever is table-able or List-able
and Then have Grammar Explanations so that it all makes sense

The Table and List part is fairly straight forward and shouldnt change
The explanations can be developed and improved/edited like a wiki-style

The over-all Idea is to have a "standard" or "universal" flow
so that you could read thru a PDF file of any etc Language and get the same
Information in the same (approximate) order, not all Languages are the same
in fact, i guess all Languages are different in some manner or way of speaking

writing, or conceptual formation.

similar but different. but a consistent look and feel, work flow could be cool.

just an Idea

**

www.book2.de really rocks! it is a way cool Idea and extremely well thought out.
