I often walk or get the bus to work, which takes 20-30 minutes and it's good time to revise audio material or listen to audiobooks. However I can't do any speaking practice which is the most important thing for me (or, at least, I'm too shy to start shadowing or reading aloud on a bus!). So I'd rather have a shorter commute and more free time in the evening as I feel that I can use the time at home more effectively.
Yes, noise isolating earphones are very useful, the ones with the rubber flange type thing that fits in your ear and blocks out a lot of outside noise. I can now have my MP3 player's volume at 2 or 3 rather than 12 or 13 (it goes to 20) so I'm damaging my ears less; I'm a musician so I worry about that stuff! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

That's not necessarily so. Speaking practice doesn't have to be done outloud. A big part of fluency is the ability for the brain to string together information without pause, it's not really the ability to utter it outloud. (I describe my workflow here and quickly explain how mental practice to increase fluency and automaticity can be done anywhere.) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

It's a pity that I can't use my commuting to work anymore for language learning. The tram I use now, needs only ten minutes and is crowded with schoolchildren who have to arrive at their schools at 8 o'clock.
