I am generally extremely good with spelling, but until college I spelled "harassment" with an extra "r."
"Massachusetts" was troublesome, too; I would add an extra "s" after the "u." It still trips me up once in a while.

Occasional, occasion, occasionally.... I never know whether the c or the s is double, but good old spell check
is always there for me in this day and age.

I'm good at it too, but I used to think retarted is written/pronounced like that. I learned the correct spelling after a nasty remark by an Anglophone who didn't even think of the possibility that I might not be a native speaker.

One word I always seemed to vacillate on was "independence/dependence." For some reason,
I was never confident that it ended in "-ence," and always second guessed myself. I
sometimes would have to look it up to convince myself it wasn't "independance." Pretty
silly, really, but for some reason it has plagued me in the past. I'm pretty sure I've
got it now!
