Hello, all!

I started learning Portuguese back in December 2008, but quit right around September
2009, due to stress, work, relationship drama -- the excuse list is as long as your arm!
But now I'm back, and I'm going to make my trip to Brazil the best one yet! Even though
a lot has changed since 2009, my affection for the Brazilian language is still as strong
as it was the moment I heard the language being spoken for the first time.

Today, I found an awesome resource that some of you might find useful:
http://www.portuguesepod101.com There, I
reviewed a list of words that I had already known and brushed up on them.

Now, I'm just waiting for both my textbook and workbook, Brasil: Lingua e Cultura
to come in the mail so that I can start acing the chapters in it.

Other materials I have are:
Pimsleur Brazilian Portuguese I
Modern Portuguese Grammar Book
Oxford Portuguese Dictionary
Two easy-reader Portuguese books

I also have Anki to review vocabulary, but nothing beats actually holding flashcards in
your hand, so I bought about 500 index cards for vocabulary.

Now to talk about my goals. Well, I am currently at A2, and I'm going to take it a step
at a time, so my current goal is to be at B1 proficiency in about three months. Not sure
if that's a realistic goal, but I think I can manage.

If anyone has any advice, material recommendations, or snippets of info they'd like to
share, it would be much appreciated!

Just finished Pimsleur Portuguese I unit 11. Also talked to my friend Dani from Sao Paulo
in Portuguese. Had to use Google translate for a few words, but according to her, I can
articulate well. (:

Can't wait to go to Brazil after college!

DLI may be old, 1960's, but the drills really helped me to get Portuguese in my head- DLI Portuguese. The course has hours of audio in Brazilian Portuguese and a limited amount of English is used. The pdf's are eight volumes of 10 lessons each. There are lots of drills, not boring for me. It is free to download. The quality of the pdf's is not the greatest but they are readable and can be cleaned up with ocr. The ones you'll want are the "Basic Books" and then Volumes 1-8. There is almost no military terminology in these volumes. The audio for the course is located under the link called "Portuguese mp3's".

I also used Pimsleur 1,2 and 3 for pronunciation and colloquial speech. I found it quite helpful. You're already speaking to natives, that is so important

Another resource I would recommend to you is Café Brasil- Luciano Pires. The podcasts are interesting, full of Brazilian music and come with a transcript to follow.

Though not Brazilian, I enjoyed Deutsche Welle Aprender de Ouvido- Fábulas Áfricanas when I first started learning Portuguese. This link is to a "radionovela" in 10 episodes of about 10-12 minutes each with a transcript in simple language telling African folktales. The mp3's and pdf's are available for free download. Don't worry about it screwing up your accent and the non-Brazilian Portuguese, you'll be fine. You can also go to the English section for the series and download the pdf's for a bilingual text.

Telecurso- Lingua Portuguesa Ensino Fundamental It's not a course but more like an examination of how Portuguese is used to communicate. The videos are subtitled in Portuguese. This is more useful when you get to an intermediate level.

Lastly, there's Tá Falado and Conversa Brasileira from UT Austin.

Boa sorte. I'll be following your progress. If I can help you please let me know.

Thank you, ChiaBrain!

I finally got Brasil: Lingua e Cultura in the mail today, both the workbook and the
textbook. I love it already! Its layout and style reminds me of the Spanish textbooks I
used in high school. So a little nostalgia is good when it comes to learning languages.

Now, to get busy on the books... after a Pimsleur lesson, of course.

Did two Pimsleur lessons, and studied a little bit of Lição Um in Brasil: Lingua e
Cultura
.

I have to say, I love this textbook! I recommend it to anyone learning Português do
Brasil! All you need is the textbook and workbook (together $20 on textbooks.com) and the
audio CDs are free online! With
these materials, you gain skills in reading, writing, and speaking!

On a side note, I also made and reviewed flashcards of words I knew I would need to use
in the near future.
