I've been looking at the FSI website, www.fsi-language-courses.org , and the forums on that site seem to have a lot
of spam. Does anybody know whether the site is still safe to download from?

I've never had a problem with it (though its previous incarnation supposedly had a virus problem).

PDF's and MP3's as far as I know, cannot contain viruses, it have to be an executable file.

A pdf can contain a virus. See for example
And a file does not have to be executable to carry a virus. It can use a buffer overflow in the software that is used to view or listen to it to carry out an exploit.

None of my software - and I have a lot has detected anything on any of the files I had downloaded.
When the OP referred to bugged I had a different concept in mind!

I'm still downloading pdfs and audios from the site and everything seems okay for me.

Ah, I never ever use Adobe's PDF-reader. But since they allow macros and advanced functionality it is certainly as
dangerous as Word files :/...

Well for the Chinese, some of the downloads come as .mp and thus dont work you have to manually change the extension. Also some of the links are broken and I had to download material from elsewhere.
