Well, memrise does have ways to incorporate grammar. You can ask the makers to create a <TL grammar> topic for you and then you create cloze deletion decks, for example.
Memrise itself is about to release a sample sentence version. No idea about the ETA though.
I don't use any premade courses, I make all my content myself. I translated the Core 6000 into German and I'll add more to my Japanese Pod 101 list later on. There's nothing wrong for me with learning Japanese through English, but learning through my mother tongue makes stuff stick better, so I build all my stuff in the Japanisch topic rather than in Japanese.

I am about 20% through the 1000 words of elementary German course. For grammar, I have
two books. English Grammar for Students of German and German Made Simple. I am also
trying out duolingo.com and have completed a couple lessons.
