I've had a Teach Yourself Afrikaans course laying around forever, and finally decided
to crack it open and take a look.

I have to say, while the grammar is quite easy (at least so far), pronunciation is
tricky. The book opens with a pronunciation guide that looks straightforward enough,
but start listening to the audio, and you'll soon discover just how many diphthongs and
variations on the same vowel there are. None of these sounds are difficult to reproduce
in isolation, but stringing them together is... amusing.

I get the feeling this is just a very small taste of what a non-English speaker
experiences when they start learning English. It's kind of maddening.

Anyway, I haven't run across many Afrikaans posts here, but would love to hear how
other English speakers have overcome some of the pronunciation obstacles (other than a
lot of input).

I'm glad I found this thread again.

I don't know that I've overcome any pronunciation obstacles yet, but I learned very quickly that just listening to Afrikaans was not enough. I found that repeatedly singing along to Afrikaans songs also helped me a lot and I found many songs at the Openlanguages.net site.
