I started, but abandoned the OU Italian course. At that time it was on its second iteration. As a false beginner I felt hampered by the speed of the course and the amount of contact that was offered and said so on my review. The course book was Colloquial Italian, plus a few online tutorials. Often involving a native speaker.

There is now a further 1st level Italian course.

According to the website following both will get you to a B1 level and the 'Certificate in Italian'. The cost is 1250 GBP per course now (was a lot less when I signed up) and more if you are outside the UK and certain other areas.

My cousin followed and passed 3 levels of Spanish and still says he didn't get enough native contact.

I've heard good reports on the Welsh course.

@Mayday: £1250 is a lot! Is that just for the beginner level or the whole certificate
(i.e. 2 years)?

Level 2 courses have (I trust they still have) summer schools, and that put up the cost
of them. (Level 3 courses also used to have them, but they dropped them on cost
grounds, although there were some related private ones you could do).

My wife and I both did the beginners and level 1 (i.e. the complete certificate) in
Spanish, and were considering going on, but for whatever reason didn't. I doubt if we
could afford it now!

Yes, lack of native contact is always a problem with these sort of courses. The summer
schools (where available) were great, but in a way came too late in the year!
You basically have to try to make your own arrangements, e.g. meetup groups, and
nowadays of course, Skype. I'm not sure how else they could do it though.
Theoretically there was always the possibility of self-help groups, i.e. students
getting together to practice (now possible via Skype or similar), but that's still not
native contact. :-(

I understood that the first Italian course was going to be "bought-in" (unlike their
original courses which were produced in-house), which might have put up the cost.

I came very close to signing up for the Welsh in its 1st year. Should have done so
while it was still relatively cheap!

Thats £1250 per course of 30 units.

The 'Upper Intermediate' 2nd level courses cost £2500 which takes you to B2 level. It does include the residential school.
That doesnt include the set books for another £100 or so.

There isnt a 2nd level Italian course.

For 5k I could pay for a lot of self study materials, 1:1 tutor contact time and a residential. I spent about £300 on study materials & tuition. We had a couple of holidays in Spain and still have budget left.
