oz has a point regarding mobile phones.
I wouldn't think of an mp3 player as a video player, not even the fanciest iPod.
My friend bought a Creative Zen, IIRC, for language learning, but couldn't understand how to use it effectively, as it considered each file as a song with performer and audio title. She would have to either change "album name" or create playlists.
I don't think you are getting a discount for 5 instead of 1, so buy first one cheap player, check it out, try it for a few days, then when you have made your mind about what you need, pass it to another family member and purchase the next, and so on, until you reach five players in the family.

Something like this might be interesting, at least if you plan on watching movies:

If it's just for jogging I would recommend the Creative Zen 16 GB. I'm personally going to get this player as soon as I can afford it. A big plus is that it supports the audible format.

I don't have much confidence in normal mobile phones. The phones I buy here in Denmark are not very good. The iPhone might be an exception.
I think the Archos unit looks very cool. Does anyone of you have experience with this item?

Having read through this thread I would suggest looking at the reviews on cnet.com. They list their best portable video players here http://reviews.cnet.com/best-pvps/?tag=rb_content;contentNav and have hundreds of other mp3/portable video player reviews on their site. If you just want audio 8GB would suffice but if you also want video I would really suggest you get far more than that as video takes up significantly more hard drive space.
If you decide on wanting just an mp3 player I would really suggest one with a good screen. It doesn't need to be amazing but you'll need a good sized screen so you can easily navigate through your mp3s. If you listen to podcasts regularly you should also look for a player that organizes them well, an iPod is a good example of one that does, though so do many other players (the Creative players do if I remember correctly).

My friend. If you can get the Iphone for $160, I suggest you go that route.
If you're already on an existing phone contract with your provider (and have no future plans to leave them) you really have nothing to lose except for $160.
It is virtually a 15GB computer.... And If you jail-break it (don't ask your provider how to do that, it is 'illegal') you will have access to thousands of free applications, games and utilities with a click of your mouse. The real magic of the IPHONE is after you jail-break it. Even many happy IPHONE users haven't experienced the true-magic of a jailbroken iphone. It is EASY to jail-break it too, you can do it yourself. Some people are intimidated by things like that and don't bother and thus have really boring iPHONES without realizing the fun they're missing!!!
I have all 52 video-episodes of French in Action, including the textbook and workbooks on it!!! You can't do that on a standard mp3 player.
The IPHONE has dramatically accelerated my language-learning by many folds. (I've had mp3 players before..)
Furthermore, you don't have to carry a phone and an mp3 player. As another member has mentioned, it true that it can be annoying carrying both.
p.s. If anybody wants to learn/know how to jail-break their iphone. Send me a private message and I can show you how. Takes less than 20 minutes.

For what it's worth, apple is shipping new iPhone 3GSs that are "jail break" proof. I don't necessarily think it's a good idea but it's being done. (More info here: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/10/13/apple-shipping-iph one-3gs-resistant-to-jailbreaking/ )
Also, as long as your mp3 player can play videos and view PDFs it's not all that spectacular to be able to fit 52 French in Action videos on your device. The new Archos device can definitely do this as can the android phones that are on the market. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Palm Pre can and I'm almost positive most if not all windows mobile devices can. Lets also note that he has to buy five of these devices (he wants one for him, his wife, and each of his kids) so an iPhone wouldn't necessarily be the best choice.
I don't hate Apple products (I'm typing on a MacBook Pro right now) and I do love my iPhone, I just don't think that the iPhone is the best device for the job.

I've been using an 500 MB iRiver player for the last couple of years. It's a little short of memory but I switch files often instead. The good point is that it runs on a ordinary AA battery so there is no hassle with recharging the device. It was necessary to upgrade the firmware to use it as a USB device, but I belive the new models work as USB devices as bought - important so please check it out. Some other useful functions for language learning is the microphone and being able to vary the play speed.
I have an iPod (160 GB) as well where I keep everything, including movies like French in Action, but there just isn't as much opportunities for watching stuff so I end up bringing my small MP3-player instead.

Why would someone jailbreak an iPod? Does it interfere significantly on language learning if it is not jailbroken? My current best buy would be an iPhone with Creative Zen devices and the Sansa Fuse as runners up (both at the second spot), due to price considerations, ease of use, quality of audio and video and cost in daily use. So if jailbreaking is a must, does it make the other players the best buy if one does not want to jailbreak?
So what does one get if one jailbreaks the phone that one can't live without? And does one need to jailbreak the iPhone in order to watch the French in Action episodes? Is it necessary for other programs, file types, whatever (you fill in the detailes). :-)
I guess it is not necessary for the Pimsleurs and the FSI courses to run, or the other major programs (for instance Asimil). I also assume that the Anki runs on the iPhone.
Microsoft lost a monopoly case recently that may spill over into the jailbreaking question. Microsoft held the position that they could decide which operating systems were allowed on OEM computers, thus preventing the possiblity of a dual-boot option (Red Hat + Windows). The dual-boot option has the advantage that it loads faster - the computer is ready in an instant compared to the eons a windows based computer takes to boot. This means that a dual-boot computer would have access to the Internet and mails in an instant. While one checks mails the Windows operating system finishes booting. If one want to use Microsoft Office, then one has to wait a couple of minutes before the computer is ready. Microsoft lost the case and we can expect dual boot computers to be sold to the public sometimes next year - with a Linux/Windows 7 combo. I see similarities between this case and the iPhone jailbreaking battle. If the rulings are consistent and anti-monopoly friendly, either jailbreaking becomes legal or anti-jailbreaking measures becomes illegal.
