Stu Jay says he can learn 3,000 words in a week. That seems abnormal based on how things have been going with my studies.

I've been using Iversen's wordlists method for a couple of months now and it seems that I can quite effortlessly learn about 100 words/hour with it. I haven't tried to learn more than 300 words/day though. I need to read the whole list of words right after i learn them and then repeat them the next day, and then I can remember about 95-98% of them after a week.

I don't think it's even remotely possible to learn that many words or even many fewer in one week, even for Stu Jay.

Wow. My answer would be in the vicinity of: Forever. (As an answer to how long...) 100 words an hour sound like a lot, but I guess we are all different.

Depends on the word I guess. Words that pop up all the time (such as the word 동무, which means Comrade, that is said about 20 times per episode of the Korean drama 전우): Almost instantly without investing any time or effort. Words that are not as common: I usually add a card or two for these to my Spaced Repetition System, which takes maybe a minute + a few seconds for each review.
It also depends on when you consider a specific word "learned". Have you learned it as soon as you create a flashcard? As soon as you can understand it used in context? As soon as you can understand it without any context? Or as soon as you can (and do) use it yourself when you are speaking or writing your target language? For a normal working week (35 hrs) that would be 85 words per hour, or 42 seconds per word. I think the most intensive I've heard is the "goldlist" method. It's supposed to take about 20 mins to make list, which you effectively repeat 3-4 times, so say about 25 words per hour. I think he only envisaged one or two lists per day though, not non-stop for a full week, so realistically perhaps 300 per week. 1 person has voted this message useful |
