Just to be my usual splitter of hairs, I don't think we're talking about methods for learning languages. It seems to be that it's more like strategies or approaches for learning. I would not call taking a class a method. Classes can be so many different things and use different methods.

O.K., now that that detail is off my chest, I think that any one of the strategies mentioned here can work. In fact, I think you have to combine approaches.

Most people here are not big fans of classes, and understandably so. Personally, I like a good class. Why reinvent the wheel? I enjoy having a good guide to answer all my questions and correct me. Independent study is great, but it requires enormous self-discipline and time. I'm shopping around for a very advanced Spanish class right now because I feel that some structure and a weekly regimen would be good for me. But, and this is a big but, finding the right class is not easy.

Hi allard, it´s nice to hear from a Canadian who wants to improve his Spanish. I´m Spanish and I studied in Canada, let me know if there is anything I could do for you.

I agree with your opinion on the use of "method", "strategy"...

Regards

I like to give my brain a variety of challenges and treats.
So it's a tasty combination of:
1. Reading books aimed at 10-12 year olds. Both intensive and extensive reading
plus a bit of 'sentence mining' for new vocab.
2. Anki. A daily ritual. Decks for vocabulary, verb conjugates, idioms and (soon, I
   keep stalling), noun declensions.
3. Grammar / course books with or without audio.
4. Online tests and games.
5. Polish TV (but I get distracted by imagery) and radio.
6. Lang-8 for writing practice.
7. .....and finally, something I haven't got but am looking for: Conversation partners.

My favourite is reading, my least favourite is grammar drills.
What I want the most is someone brave (or mad) enough to talk with me.

Put ads in local Kijiji or similar sites, contact local language schools and teachers in case they have Poles studying there, and post ads on university boards in buildings where there are English classes. You want someone who's also learning English so it's a fair exchange and the person is also motivated to meet you.

I've been with my current Japanese language partner for almost 2 years and we met after I wrote to a local language school. They passed my message on to the teachers who then showed my ad to the Japanese students. Only one was brave enough to reply, but it's been a very beneficial exchange for both of us.

Believe it or not, number 6 can help you find number 7. I found my Skype language partner that way.

I just realized something. We have a problem here. We can't find the ideal learning
method. What do we do with problems? We fix them. Or at least that's what I do. Like
when I started to get insomnia, I taught myself to fall asleep on command. All you have
to do is block out as much noise as you can (although it's not always possible) and
breathe naturally, and focus on the breathing, nothing but the breathing, but only in the
back of your mind, until your mind escapes its bonds.

The thing is, I don't try to fix problems, I actually do fix them. That is the
key. I will find an ideal learning method, or at least an extremely effective method.
M...I expect people to think this is ridiculous. It kind of is, I'm not going to lie.
But I have to try. I also have to succeed.
