After many many years of procrastination, I am finally ready to delve into Bulgarian. My wife is from Bulgaria and still speaks fluently, but she doesn't know how to teach it to me. And since we learn in different ways, she probably wouldn't have the patience to teach me anyway. However, she will be there to help me with any questions and, of course, to practice once I am able.

So, where do I start? There doesn't seem to be a wide variety of resources. I purchased "Teach Yourself Bulgarian" years ago, but I never liked the format of that book. Can anybody suggest a good starting point for me? I have mastered the alphabet and I know a few words and phrases, but that's about all.

I look forward to your replies.

Let me rephrase: I never really gave "Teach Yourself" a fair try. But I didn't like how it seemed to focus on business travelers, which I am not.

If you know some French Assimil has a French-based course for Bulgarian, if you like the Assimil series.

I found this, Bulgarian grammar drills, but it might not be suitable for a beginner:

Good luck, I guess it's kind of slim pickin's for Bulgarian resources. I'd say check out Moses McCormick's channel on YouTube, I remember he had some videos on Bulgarian resources. He's laoshu505000.

Routledge has Colloquial Bulgarian available with mp3/CD audio. Check it out at Google Books Colloquial Bulgarian

You might also consider doing a language exchange with a Bulgarian who is learning English on-line via skype and/or finding an on-line skype tutor.

Having your wife there to help you is a big plus.

On Amazon there are some textbooks and CDs ( Amazon link ) but I don't know what to recommend. This one gets some good reviews:

Intensive Bulgarian: A Textbook & Reference Grammar by Ronelle Alexander and Olga M. Mladenova

I've purchased this book as a reference grammar and it is definitely too advanced for beginners. I recommend
buying it only after you have at least an intermediate understanding of the grammar and vocabulary.

I read the first volume of this book from cover to cover and it really is very concise in explaining grammar but the
vocabulary is placed into giant word banks and isn't actively reinforced except with translations in between lessons
which are clearly too advanced for beginners. Also, while most resources are probably susceptible to this, I found
a few mistakes in the book concerning grammar. Many of the sentence constructions and idioms are modeled too
closely to their English counterparts and may be helpful to learners but don't sound very idiomatic.

FSI and DLI? Your wife can easily tell you when you're using outdated words, and it
should (at least!) leave you in a good position to start the advanced course mentioned
above. Just a thought, hope it helps!

Thanks for your replies.

I got a copy of "Colloquial Bulgarian", so maybe I'll start there.

I'm familiar with FSI, but could somebody share a working link to download it?

What is DLI?

My wife is happy to help in any way she can, she just doesn't know where to begin to teach me. I would love our children to learn Bulgarian as well, so anything child-friendly is a plus.
