I find Hebrew much easier to read (well, no surprise since I learnt to read/write it when I was 5 years old) but having
not grown up in Israel I still find handwritten Hebrew rather difficult to decipher.

I would like to better my Hebrew one day to get to a point where I can participate in a
conversation. I haven't ever actually stopped studying it, but my reading is very slow
even with nikud. The only things I can read without sounding like a barely literate child
sounding out words are the most common prayers read in shul. I can read the Sh'ma with
Ve'ahavtah, Adon Olam, the basic birkhot for various things (handwashing, candlelighting,
hamotzi, etc.) without any trouble because I kind of already know the words anyway. But
anything else, I need nikkud and it's sssslllloooowwww.

I think that coupled with the fact that, outside of a religious context, I don't have any
contact with Hebrew are the main discouraging factors for me. These challenges are
greater than the difficulties of the language itself.
