I checked this book out from my university for the summer and have been at work digitizing its contents at a rate of 200 words a day.
From the author: "The first 2,000 words can be regarded as a core vocabulary for a British A level course, an intensive graduate-level course in Russian or two years of Russian at an American college. Roughly speaking, a vocabulary of 2,000 items guarantees recognition of at least 75 percent of the words in any Russian text. Four thousand should be the target for the end of a post-A level year of a university course in Britain or an advanced college course in America. In my years of... students specializing in Russian I have treated 8,000 as graduate level competence level; a vocabulary of the commonest 8,000 words guarantees recognition of well over 90 percent of the words in any Russian text (and in practice about 97 per cent, since many of the words not in the list will be proper names or easily guessed internationalisms)." There might be debate over the particular accuracy of frequency lists with regard to their own claims, but certainly there is great need for an extensive vocabulary list weighted towards frequency. Despite having had a successful two years of Russian instruction at university so far with more to come, my vocabulary size is very low and wanted to work on this weaknesses of my own. I've noticed however that a lot of others are in my own shoes. Whether their university instruction hasn't lived up to some set of standards or they are studying on their own, everyone tends to need some assistance in vocabulary. This is why I decided to digitize this list and make it available online. I am making no profit off of this endeavor, and hope its purely educational nature will permit itself. Anyhow, I finished my first 1,000 words and felt I would go ahead and start posting and getting feedback. Most of my work is mainly transcription. A few words I looked up in a dictionary because their given definition wasn't clear. I left out a few words which were largely pronouns, and also combined verbs into their imperfective-perfective pairs which in the book were left separate. I do apologize though for any roughness there may be. At some point I'd like to just go through and clean everything up, perhaps once I reach the 2,000 word point. I should be back in under a week with the first 2,000 milestone reached. I will update this first post with a link to it, as well as a post a new one about it. Unfortunately for now, you will have to use Anki as your means for viewing the vocabulary list for now. It looks good so far, though I wouldn't have combined the imperfect/perfect verb pairs, but that's personal preference.
