I'm looking for opinions from people who are using / have used the brand new Russian with
Ease from Assimil, with the English base. As I understand, it's a translation of the
French version, Le Russe. How does it measure up in comparison to the fairly poor "Le
Russe sans peine"?
Cheers!

I have no idea about the French version, but I do know that I really like the English base Russian with Ease that Assimil have made. So much, in fact, that I've made it to lesson 79 in 79 days!
It's really good, it's Assimil. There are a few bugs and some translations are too free, but other than that, it's great.

tarvos: Thanks for the input. Did you order it directly from Assimil?

I'm on 85 in the first wave and 36 in the second. This is the first time I've used Assimil as my main course, and I'm doing it
the way they suggest. I'm going to complete this course, and then I'll try to give a thorough review. But I will say a few
words now.
Basically, the Assimil method, as spelled out, doesn't work well for me. The method tends to be more passive than most,
and I've never been a good passive learner. If you have used Assimil before with good results, and feel the method is sound,
then the Russian course will probably be better suited for you. But keep in mind that for English speakers, Russian is pretty
"grammar intensive", and don't be surprised if you'll need to supplement Assimil more than you did for a less intensive
language. I could be wrong about that. Maybe the French program would have been just as poor for me if I had used it.
Out of Penguin, Modern, Princeton and Assimil, the best course for me is Penguin.

I'm not too fussed with the intricate details of the grammar. I do make some mistakes with it (everybody does) but in general I don't get carried away when I do because I have studied German for four and Latin for five years respectively, thus cases and odd constructions weren't new to me.
And I always supplement what I do with something else.

I'm on lesson 23 now with the new Russian With Ease, and I'm really liking it! Assimil's
approach works for me, but I agree with Wulfgar here. The best Russian course for me is
still Penguin.

Today was Lesson 13 for me in Russian With Ease from the English base. I am emnjoying it
so far. I'm doing the old Dutch w/ Ease directions with it and doing it once in the
morning and once at night most days (though today I was packing up for a move tomorrow
and was helping a friend buy a car, so once may have to suffice). I am enjoying it so
far.
After I take the FSOT and LSAT next month, I will likely begin digging into the Penguin
course as I think I'll have enough exposure to vocab and such for it all to make sense.
Long story short, I'd say you get it based off my experience so far.
