I will likely begin digging into the Penguin
course as I think I'll have enough exposure to vocab and such for it all to make sense.

I've heard great things about the Penguin course, but since it doesn't have audio and Russian pronunciation is tricky, I agree about using another course first to learn vocab with audio. I'm using Princeton for this though instead of Assimil.

nakrian keegiat makes a good point. Penguin is far from perfect. I'll add that it's pronunciation unit is very poor, imo.
Penguin is the best choice for me, out of those I listed, because of my specific situation. I have a pretty solid
foundation in pronunciation already, and I do a decent amount of reading and listening almost every day on LingQ. So
even if I wasn't using Assimil, I think it would be the best choice.
I like Penguin because it has (relatively) clear grammar explanations, well structured, small enough for me to cross
reference stuff quickly, small but suprisingly good index, consistency in explanations, lots of drills with answers, etc.
I'll list some things I don't like about other two programs I mentioned.
Modern is too big, has some outdated vocabulary, no answers to the drills.
Princeton is too big, too disorganized, has a phonetic system I don't like, and no answers to the drills.
