It is said that today, 5.7., in 863 Saints Cyril and Methodius came into the Czech
Republic (Great Moravia at that time) in order to teach local people literacy. In the Great Moravia Cyril and Methodius saw that local people come to church every Sunday but there they would repeat only Latin prayers, not understanding a word of it. It was this experience that sparkled the idea in Cyril's and Methodius' mind to make a standardize version of the local language, create script for it and later translate the Bible into this language. Yes, you're guessing right - they 'created' Old Church Slavonic. The Church wasn’t impressed when it found out that people are talking to their Lord in their local language. In defence, Cyril wrote a versed prologue to a first book ever written in Old Church Slavonic (or so it is said - it is called Proglas and it is a translation of a couple of gospels). In the prologue, Cyril explained how important it is for people to truly understand the texts in the Bible. It is said that this was the first impulse to start translating the Bible into one’s native language. An important milestone indeed. Unfortunately I was unable to find an English version of this prologue. Here is a link to Czech translation http://www.moraviamagna.cz/texty/t_progla.htm It's somewhat difficult read so I apologies in advance if my attempt to make a translation, of the part I think is the most important, has failed. Kdo může uvést všechny příklady - Who is able to give all the examples usvědčující národy bez knih, convicting nations with books, 75 které nemluví hlasem srozumitelným? which does not speak in comprehensible voice? Ani kdybys uměl všechny řeči, - Even if all the languages in the world you could speak nedovedl bys vylíčit jejich bezmoc.-you wouldn't be able to express their (people of those nations) helplessness. Než i já chci připojit své podobenství -I too want to submit my parable a mnoho smyslu podat v málo slovech. - and give great meaning in a small number of words. 80 Nahé jsou všechny národy bez knih - Naked are all nations without books. Thank you for reading, if you’re still reading. I thought that perhaps someone may find this interesting. Sorry for any irregularities, I am not an expert of any kind. This is just a summary of what I learnt at school. Didn't Cyrill actually create the Glagolic alphabet?
