Not sure if this counts, but I had a really big crush on a Russian figure skater when I was in my teens. That got me interested in learning the language, but I'd probably still take it up out of an interest in their performing and visual arts.

Not JUST for love necessarily, but I certainly wasn't planning on seriously pursuing Dutch before I got with my boyfriend. The more I fall in love with him, the more I fall in love with the Dutch language. I didn't have a lot of exposure to it before, but now I LOVE listening to it, I love hearing him speak it, and I want nothing more than to be able to speak it with him.

I'd go forth with Czech if i had myself a Czech woman, they are such nice people and I want an excuse to learn this great language.

Does love for a language is count?

I love French so much, I always wish someone could help me learn the language.

I haven't bothered to read all of the replies. Just wanted to say that I think LOVE IS THE BEST REASON to learn a
language!

When I first got together with my wife (from Germany), she had moved to the UK and spoke fluent English. I didn't need German for our life here but we go to Germany 2 or 3 times per year to visit her family. I wanted to understand what was being said over there so that was a big reason for me to learn.

I often wonder how people who don't make the effort to learn their spouse's language cope in family situations abroad.

I can learn to love a person only if there is at least a common language we speak, I need this common ground because I actually have to know a girl before truly loving her. Otherwise if we only express with gestures I don't perceive it as love, but rather as a strong physical attraction (at most), which can be quite remarkable anyway, but yet it's not love. Anyway, the answer is yes - of course I'll do that for a very special girl (to me).

I'm learning Japanese because I met a Japanese woman. So yeah, I would. It would've been a whole hell of a lot easier had she been from Europe or America!!
