Oleg, compare the number of Russian students with the number of French students or even
latin students in the West. You forgot that Russian is one of the most spread languages
in the world.
Of course, it doesn't mean that Russian is the most understudied language in the world.
There are three factors which are against Russian in Western Europe:
lack of necessity
lack of tradition
lack of fashion
Am I right?

You forgot that Russia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world.

The geographic concentration of people in Russia means that, in terms of demographic spread, it really looks more like this:

Sure, Russia and Kazakhstan both cover vast distances of land, but when most of that is uninhabited natural landscape, what's the relevance of a man-made language? Natural beauty transcends the arbitrary articulations of the civilized tongue.

Besides, no one's actually going to be traveling and exploring ALL that land. One could spend an entire lifetime in Hong Kong or the Netherlands and never get bored. A few friendly people—not millions of square kilometers of land or hundreds of millions of speakers—are what make a language worthwhile.

But Russian is still one of the most spoken languages in the world anyway: it has plenty
of
first and second speakers.

And which of the following languages doesn't: Arabic, Mandarin, Portuguese, Hindi, Bengali? And while Russian is spoken only in Russia and countries that were friendly occupied by us, all of which are geographically close, French, for instance, is spoken in Europe and America, as well as Spanish, as well as.. even Dutch! Mm?

Necessity, which is the mother of invention, is determined by us. If in my opinion Bengali is necessary to learn, I'll be learning it.

Lack of tradition? Well, we Russians got used to thinking that the West lacks tradition, especially compared to us the Guardians of Wisdom, but actually the tradition of studying the Russian language in the West is way more developed than in Russia, believe it or not.

Lack of fashion? Well, fashion comes from advertising, you know.

Arabic is not one language actually. One needs to learn MSA first and then a dialect
and one will still have some problems with understanding another. There is a thread
"Questions regarding Arabic" on the forum. Mandarin will probably become the world
language. And I don't say that Russian must be prefered to, say, Mandarin.
The second part of your post is just trolling.

That's all nonsense.
I meant the tradition of teaching Russian at schools and universities. For example,
there is a tradition to learn Latin. The same can be said about Russia. There is an old
tradition to learn French and German, while more spread Spanish is generally neglected.
