So, I will be attending a language school in January to start learning Indonesian. I'm
not allowed to "self teach" before I attend for fear we will learn incorrect things/get
into bad habits.

I essentially just want to learn some basic vocab before I go. I'm thinking I will
mostly likely buy Rosetta Stone Indonesian to do for a couple of months. I know most
people here dislike RS but I only want vocab and an intro to the language. Also, it
will only cost me $150 for 3 months (and will be a tax deductible expense).

Another huge selling point for me, as silly as it sounds, is that I spend a lot more
time on my iPad than my laptop, and I can do RS through there. Also, it means I can
pick it up for 20 mins on my lunch break, etc.

All that said if anyone knows of any other suitable programs please let me know, but it
seems to be rather slim pickings for Indonesian with the same convenience.

I think they have given you an incredibly stupid piece of advice.

I have never tried to learn Indonesian, but I would be surprised if RS Indonesian is better than any of these:
Linguaphone Indonesian
Teach Yourself Indonesian
Colloquial Indonesian

It is not stupid advice in this circumstance. I'm not able to give you the specifics, but
I assure you that it's completely justified for the situation.

I'll look into these other programs for Indonesian and compare them for what I need
(mostly just basic vocab). Thanks.

How good is your French? Assimil has a course as well.

Not good enough, unfortunately, otherwise I'd definitely be using that because I do like
Assimil.

If you use any of the programs mentioned, be it Rosetta Stone, Linguaphone, Teach Yourself, Colloquial or
Assimil, you're actually self-teaching. It is a stupid piece of advice, and you seem willing to ignore it, but
not admit that you do so.
