Greetings all.
I've been trying to find a frequency word list for MSA but have been quite unsuccessful.
And to make the task even more difficult, I'd need it with diacritics. Anyone by chance
happen to have a list of this kind or know of one lurking about in the interwebz?
Sorry if I put this into the wrong section of the forum. This seemed most fitting.
Cheers,
Touko

It sounds like you want a general word list for MSA. I can't help you there, but you might want to check out the book 'The Top 1,300 Words for Understanding Media Arabic' by Elisabeth Kendall.
Another somewhat related work is a set of three books entitled 'Access to Quranic Arabic' by Abdul Wahid Hamid. The book is much more than a word list, but its index contains a few word lists. One list is for words that occur more than 100 times in the Koran, and the others are for more than 50 and 25 times.

Another book you could try is A Frequency Dictionary of Arabic: Core Vocabulary for Learners
I don't have it, but what I remember from seeing a copy is:
It lists the first 5,000 MSA words from a variety of sources in frequency order. Each head word is vowelled. It also has a short (unvowelled) paragraph containing the word and an English translation of the paragraph.
It's a nice book.

Thank you Andrew C, that was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Or atleast it looks like the
kind of thing I was looking for. I ordered the book from bookdepository and we'll see
what it's like.
Elisabeth Kendall's book I already have and will be using it later on for work related
stuff, but currently I'm looking to get my core 1000 or so in order to start wading
through readers I have accumulated.
Cheers
