Hey everyone. My family recently told me that they're hoping we can travel to Germany,
Switzerland, and Austria next summer, and I couldn't let an opportunity to learn some
German pass me up. Having gone through my library, I found they had Pimsleur II and III
but not Pimsleur I. I hear so many good things about the program that I want to try it
out, but I don't have enough money to buy the Pimsleur I CDs.

So far I'm working through FSI German and I just purchased Assimil German with ease. At
what point will I know enough that I can start the Pimsleur II and III CDs and still get a
lot out of them?

Since you have time, ask your librarian for an "inter-library loan" to get the first volume of Pimsleur German. In just a few weeks you can have all three levels.

I agree with iguanamon. I am a librarian by profession, and I can tell you that we appreciate when patrons let us know that something from a series is missing. If you library already owns the advanced levels of materials, it would most likely want the missing beginner level just to be complete. Also, most library budgets allow for the purchase of items from patron requests, so it will save you from direct out of pocket costs.

Already now. Pimsleur I, 30 lessons, is very limited in the amount of words and grammatical structures it presents. If you know some, even very little German, you can jump to Pimsleur II right now and you'll get the benefits of Pimsleur anyway (for example, a good pronunciation). If you find the first lessons difficult, just repeat them a couple of times.
On the contrary, if you proceed with FSI and Assimil now, Pimsleur will become useless and too boring to use effectively.

You might also find the transcription of Pimsleur German I somewhere on the internet.

You've picked some of the best resources I know of and you are wise to use a variety of tools since they each have their own strengths.

Pimsleur is a great series for working on your pronunciation and learning useful phrases for conversation.

Assimil will give you a well-rounded overview of the language and will develop your ability to read, as well as to speak. As you've probably already discovered, FSI is good for drilling on grammar and will also help you learn phrases.

In my own case, I began with Assimil to get a broad introduction, will complete FSI to sharpen my grammar and then Pimsleur to improve my pronunciation and conversational ability. I'd suggest sampling a little bit of each to decide which one you feel most comfortable beginning with and then working through each, as time permits. Good luck!

I think I'm going to ask the librarian to find another copy, but if that fails I'm just
going to start Pimsleur II. Thanks so much for all your answers!
