I just started doing L-R with A Christmas Carol. I think the book is too hard for this purpose, but I am already starting to comprehend entire sentences, and I've only done it for about four hours. I am already trying to plan the next book as I'll be finished with this one in a week if I keep up. I want something with more colloquial speech. I can't find any of the following from any of the websites listed in the commercial audiobook thread:

The Hobbit (El Hobbit)
Little House on the Prairie (any from the series)
The Chronicles of Narnia (found Prince Caspian)
Redeeming Love (Amor Redentor) by Francine Rivers

Should I just give up on finding my favorite books? I don't like Harry Potter or Twilight (they seem popular on here) but I'm open to suggestions. :)

I had suggested the following in the this thread (Dec 2008):

Las
Cincos Personas Thread

"If anyone is looking for a Spanish (from the English equivalent) book and Spanish
audio combination that is "easier" than Harry Potter or the Dan Brown books (El Codigo
DaVinci, Angeles y Demonios), you might want to look into the Spanish version of Mitch
Albom's "The Five People You Meet in Heaven." ("Las Cinco Personas Que Encontraras en
el Cielo.") ..."

Here's a link where you can play the trailer clip from the TV movie, which was great:

The House on Mango Street is pretty good. The Spanish speaker has a pleasant voice and the stories are short and easy to follow. It's written from a child's perspective, so the language is not too complicated. It is very colloquial.

There are 2 CDs in the unabridged audio.

I recommend Cajas de Carton (the English version is called The Circuit). It is an auto biographical story about a 7 year old Mexican migrant farming boy who moves to California back in the 50s. The book follows his life and is quite good. It is a series of several short stories that can all be read separately. The audio well done in a Mexican accent.

Oh, I like your suggestions! Especially Cajas de Carton.   It sounds like a book I would have loved as a kid. Since the recording I'm currently listening to is Castilian, it will be nice to vary the accents.

The accent is great in Cajas de Carton. The audio totals about 3.5 hours so you can get through it fairly quickly. My local library has the audio in Spanish. You should definitely be able to find it through library exchange... or you could buy it on audible.com

I think it is/was a great first Spanish audio book.
