Hello, I'm new to the forum but have been lurking the past few days over some threads
and such. I am not new when it comes to learning languages and have been learning
Spanish for three years, however my interest for that seems to be fizzling. I have
decided to pick up Dutch as it is a language I never seem to hear. I actually have
never heard it spoken before. Since I like to learn unique and not so "mainstream"
languages, I have decided to give it a try.
This is my first time learning a language on my own so I am a bit new to this. I have
heard about some ways going about studying on here (Anki) but I am still looking for
some other recommendations if there are any other ways to do this.
Also, if anyone would be more than happy to point me to some good Dutch sites that will
help me build up to a higher level of comprehension as compared to Spanish and English,
Dutch gender and negation seem to be a bit confusing.
One last question, how should I really immerse myself and practice my speaking with it
as I do not know anybody who speaks Dutch?
Ok I packed a lot of questions into one post. If anyone could answer some of my
questions, I would greatly appreciate it!

As a native Dutchie I recommend you get yourself a nice basic textbook. I don't know what the best one is, but I know many people will recommend audio materials like Michel Thomas. If you have no experience listening to the spoken language, I imagine you should just spend a day or two immersing yourself in how Dutch sounds, since it's in many ways quite similar to English, but it also diverges at a fair few points, and vowel pronunciation is CRUCIALLY DIFFERENT.
Assimil is the usual recommendation for basic textbooks, but I, of course, picked up Dutch natively so I don't know.
Anki is a memorization tool for vocab - where are you going to get your vocabulary from?
Skype is amazing, and just scour the internet for Dutch speakers. You'll eventually make friends, and don't be afraid if you don't know the Dutch word for something - very many Dutch people can insta-translate any English word for you if you don't know it exactly, since English is fairly widespread.
Consonant inventory: you speak Spanish, so can you roll your r? Dutch mixes up its pronunciation of the letter "r", but do not stick with the English one - it's associated with a lazy American learner for English. Roll it either French or Spanish-style. Be prepared to use the Spanish "j" sound a LOT, it's embarassingly common in Dutch.
Apart from that, read, listen, write, speak, and be regimented in your practice of it. Despite the stereotype, Dutch people are very happy to help you learn Dutch.

Here is an HTLAL thread with information and links. There are better HTLAL threads for Dutch links but I can't find them at the moment. These are very good ones to start with.
