Both are used frequently, so it really depends on the person speaking.

As a native speaker both sound equivalent to me. I would say they are interchangeable. Both are fine, and both mean the same thing.

the first one sounds more general. The second construction is correct and said, but not
as common.

Also bear in mind the location of those giving advice. What is common or normal in one region will be "strange" in another. For example, there are two ways to apply contractions to "I have not seen him."
"I've not seen him." Common in U.K., sounds very weird in the U.S.
"I haven't seen him." Common in the U.S. (I don't know how it's perceived in U.K.)
