I suggest 2001.Kanji.Odyssey (http://www.coscom.co.jp/ebook/e-2001kanji.html). Basically it's the 1100 most common kanji, with their most common pronunciations. Each kanji is given with example words and sentences. If you go over to smart.fm, there are KO2001 lists which are the same order/words from the book but with smart.fm sentences instead (http://smart.fm/goals/47378). Kanji in Context is similar but for more advanced learners, there are no translations, grammar is around the JLPT2 level and they assume you already know the 400 or so most basic kanji.

Me too. That's exactly what It's like for me.
I'd just like to mention that pop-up dictionary utilities can be very useful too for what you have in mind, as well as giving translations of characters and words.
For Firefox you can get Hanzibar (not free but cheap) or Chinese Pera-kun (free) that will give a pop-up translation including pinyin for each character and word as you move over them with the mouse. And there are other utilities that give pop-up translations in any application, not just the browser. I tried one of these out some time ago but can't seem to find it right now.

Merry Christmas!!!
Just learn those characters they show you, and later pick up some Chinese language learning book.
This way it will be much easier for you.
Don't worry bout the pronunciation now, anyway you won't be able to use the language. Looking up each character would slow down your learning process.

Looking up that many K/Hanz/ji is just a trifle, learning them is much harder.
