Yep, I'm married to my high school sweetheart, German. However, I'm constantly... um... "running around town,"
not to put too fine a point on it, and by now I've given up and decided that this is just how I am. I guess you could
call it a committed but open relationship. (Does that sound terribly hypocritical?)
By the way, I love this thread. :)

I danced with Greek, Irish, Bengali, Thai, Russian and Farsi while I was picking my last language (I want to stop at four L2s).
Oh Persia, you great and ancient culture, your beautiful language won my heart.

I've had an affair with most Slavic languages (other than my native Polish).
I usually have a short dance with languages that belong to the same family as the language I'm studying/intend to study.
I've been flirting with Swedish for almost a year now. It's kept saying to me "Come to me, babey. I'm easy, I promise. I'm so similar to German, it will only take us a one-night-stand for you to have me. Grrrrau!"
Unfortunately, a one-night-stand turned out not to be sufficient to learn it, as these languages [German and Swedish] are not that similar after all.

"Dancing" is a much better metaphor than I had suggested. :)
I still end up seeming rather profligate, having made unserious attempts to learn Polish and Ukrainian (comparing them to Russian), Irish, Welsh, and Breton (out of an interest in Gaelic languages), Dutch and Luxembourgisch (during an extended stay in Luxembourg), Korean (comparing it to Japanese), Cantonese (comparing it to Mandarin), and Hungarian, Turkish, and Mongolian (just because).

I've used this analogy before...
I've had one-night stands with Romanian and Turkish.
I've had longer relationships with Latin, Gaelic and Welsh, but they never amounted to much.
Korean and I saw each other briefly and separated, but are now reconnecting after a long stint apart.
Mandarin, French and German have been my on-again off-agains for over a decade; German was my a middle-school sweetheart into high school, followed by French in HS, and Mandarin and I met my freshman year of college.
Danish and English have been my long-term loves. :)

Well if languages were men...
Then what does a Swedish girl need other than:
Two serious lovers
-a real macho Russian...!
-a cool and clever German..
And although I'm definitely not into one night stands....
on the side:
-a tete-a-tete with a romantic and stylish Frenchman
-a poolside flirt with a hot-blooded Spaniard...
Let no-one accuse me of not getting into the spirit of European unity... :-))

I guess it all started with French and German kiss-chase in the school playground, swiftly followed by stolen dark moments in the Algarve in Portuguese one hot summer. I fondly remember these adolescent flirtations, but if only I knew then where all this would eventually lead...
I quickly grew up, as did my pile of language books, and by the time I'd bought my first pair of Levis, I was already romantically entangled with Serbo-Croat and Greek that sunny spring. It was wonderful whilst it lasted, that was, until they both found out about each other, slashed all my Linguaphones and Reader's Digest courses in indignation, and left me to fall between two huge tape recorders and a second-hand multi-stacking record-player.
This led naturally to a mild-hearted dalliance with Greek and a night of wooing Hebrew, but their letter families were always trying to chaperon and get in the way, so this just fizzled out in the end.
Italian was a wonderful dulcet affair, which I recall with great fondness now, whilst my nights out on the town with Polish that followed were wild and frenzied and left my emotions in complete disarray. I did however learn to "talk dirty" in the language. ;)
I courted some Arabic, Aramaic and Turkish for a little while, but things just didn't seem to work out for whatever reason. So I headed north to blow off steam and ended up having an amazing week of passion with Swedish. A wonderful language!
There were other languages that fell by the wayside over the years of course. Ukrainian was a real heart-breaker, as I caught her in bed with another language; and Japanese was a wonderful partner and friend, and to rephrase the song, "I left part of my heart in Tokyo, down by the river, don't you know...".
Now I've found my perfect trigamous match, and I'm currently living in seventh heaven with Spanish, Russian and Irish. This is my "Big Love" at the moment, but if I want to add more wonderful languages to our little hippie language commune, then we'll sit around a table, hold hands and light a few josticks, and discuss it together properly over borscht, Guinness stew and home-made salsa dips. Please don't tell the authorities though, as I don't think they'll quite understand here in Germany, and let me assure you that we're all really happy living together under the one big roof in an open, loving and trusting relationship. And although things are not always easy, the rewards far far outweigh the challenges. :)
