I really want to do some dabbling (not wanderlust!) of Portuguese to get an impression of the language, but I'm now so behind in my usual language studies of Turkish and Danish that I cannot allow myself to do it. Dabbling only makes sense so me, if you have some extra capacities free to use. If the schedule is tight anyway, I would strongly advise not to do any dabbling.

Dating a language, I love it :D That's how I view it myself :)

Start with some chat up lines (analogy: phrases learned off from a phrasebook like the Lonely Planet series), making loads of mistakes but sounding cute. Then the relationship begins! You stumble by and slowly get to know one another well, but alas, the summer ends and it's time to go home!

But you write one other every now and again and the language has a special place in your heart. You may go on to other languages, but being the modern learner you are, you believe in polygamous open relationships and are happy to date several at once :P

Ah, but you'll never forget that first time [reminiscing]

Well.French is my second language and I've been learning French for many years so I
could say that I am more or less married to the French language.

As for dating other languages.

Italian for about 4 months when I was about 11-12.
Spanish for about 10 weeks when I was about 18.
German for about 2-3 weeks when I was about 20-21.

Finally Hungarian for about 10 days. This was about 3 years ago just before I was
visiting Budapest.

Had a severe bout of wanderlust today. A craving for all things Armenian, the
language, music, costumes, food...
It'll pass and I will (I must) get back to Polish pronoun declensions (gulp).
