The first thing that threw me for a loop was how I have to change the ending of a word in a simple sentence like:

I am American
Мен Америкаданмын.

You are American.
Сен Америкадансың.

You (formal) are American.
Сіз Америкадансыз.

It's almost like you have to take the verb "to be" and append it to the end of the word. I'm sure that's not really an accurate way of describing it, but that's how I have it in my mind at the moment.

So, if any Kazakh people are reading this:

Сәлем! Менің атым Брэд, сен ше? Мен Америкаданмын, мүғаліммін.

very good, Brad.i wonder why you are interested in Kazakh language? :D
if u learnt russian, then you know that they also change verb endings depending on pronouns it's used with. except they don't change "to be" in present tense.

I am American
Мен Америкаданмын. - this actually means "i am from Аmerica". kazakh for "i am american" would be "Мен американдықпын"

Сәлем! Менің атым Брэд, сен ше? Мен Америкаданмын, мүғаліммін.-
just a tiny correction: you should say "сенің ше?". just like in English, you say "my name is Brad, and yours?", as opposed to "my name is Brad, and you?"
but i must answer the question! so...

"Сәлем, Брэд! Менің атым Apaй. Мен Қазақстаннанмын. Бірақ қазір Портсмутта Cәулет өнерін оқимын"

overall i guess u know the rules very well, so it should be easy. at least in kazakh if u know the rules, u won't have problems like in Russian-- there are so many exceptions, as well as English - words can be spelled almost the same, but are pronounced differently - crazy!! :D

Vowel harmony may take a bit of getting used to - not sure how important that is in Kazakh.

well it's as important as in any other language. but it depends on which vowels you have problems to pronounce with. most of the sounds are similar to English ones in some words.

4) "Менде бір қарындас бар" - this is grammatically correct. but proper kazakh would say "менің бір қарындасыМ бар". i'm not sure why, i guess we say it only with people. if it was a lifeless object like a pen, for instance; you would say "Менде бір қалам бар". i need to do some research on that :)

Сәлем,
дұрыс айтасың, "менде ... бар" деп жансыз заттарға, "менің ... бар" деп адамдарға айтамыз. Бірақ мен де теориясын анық білмеймін :)

"Менде бір қарындас бар" would, per my understanding, mean "I have a friend with me (in the sense of "on me") at the moment", which we don't say about friends, the way we would about physical objects and the like.

"Mенің бір қарындасыМ бар" means "I have/possess a friend", even if the friend is not here at the moment.

The locative (менде) is for having something physically "with me" or "on me", while the genitive (менің) shows possession or ownership in a more abstract sense.

Both can be used, for instance, with money:

"Менде пұл жоқ" is "I have no money with me at the moment"

"Mенің пұлім жоқ" is "I have no money", i.e., "I'm poor"
