I look forward to seeing some Cantonese too. I'll be studying a bit of Vietnamese next year, and from my time studying the language before, I learned that up to sixty percent of Vietnamese vocabulary is Sino-Vietnamese (Hán Việt), i.e. derived from Chinese borrowings--though Vietnamese itself is an Austro-Asiatic language--and I find the pronunciation of the Hán Việt words looks much more similar to Cantonese pronunciation than to Mandarin. Some examples, for your reading pleasure: Simp./Trad. Characters Pinyin Jyutping Vietnamese English 决定/決定 juédìng kyut3deng6, kyut3ding6 quyết định to decide, resolve 浪漫/浪漫 làngmàn long4maan6, long6maan6 lãng mạn romantic 历史/歷史 lìshǐ lik6si2 lịch sử history Let me know if I got the Jyutping wrong; I just took it off MDBG. The jyutping is correct :) I once bought materials for learning Vietnamese, but haven't started it yet. Maybe one day I will :) I seem to be drawn to tonal languages :P Interesting to know I'll have help from Chinese! I've thought of Vietnamese as a really difficult language because of those tones, how difficult is it compared to other Asian languages?

Hi all :)
Like WingSuet, I've never done a TAC before either, though I think I've sort of got the gist of things. My goals this year are definitely focused on German/Mandarin because I'm going away to both countries from September 2012 - July 2013, so I've got to pick up my skills a bit! ... Damn you read my mind! I've been looking at Russian myself today...And ended up putting more things in my Amazon basket which I clicked to buy by "accident" lol. Oh well...I think I now have enough books/audio for all the languages I'd ever want to learn! Although I'm not sure when I'll dabble in the Cantonese/Russian books I've bought as I want to focus the majority of my energy on Mandarin. Hmm, I've also never done the TAC before but recently I've grown an interest to get back into Mandarin. Can I
join, too? Target languages: Mandarin, Indonesian I've never done too well with Mandarin in high school but I also could see how different my work ethic was. My parents spoke to me in Cantonese but I could always answer back in English, hence I have a jaded view of myself with that language that I'd like to overcome. I'm only going to be concentrating on Mandarin for now because the materials for Mandarin are much more prevalent and I don't think I'll have time to stretch into the Cantonese arena yet. Indonesian comes with my interest in Indonesian culture within my college campus. I've been playing around with lots of Indonesian music and hope to achieve a good speaking efficiency for next year when I'm applying to a scholarship to study there. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
