Being able to read Hesse in his native language is a very admirable and worthwhile goal and one you could definitely achieve with the right preparation.

I agree with @geoffw that if reading German literature is your main goal, you'll probably want to work through a text-based course. Pimsleur is great, but it's really designed to get you speaking and understanding basic conversations, not reading literature.

I'm not Quinn, and I haven't used any of these really, but the common choices mentioned around here would be the Assimil, Teach Yourself, and Colloquial series, though plenty others are out there, as well.
