I'm sure most of you already know that Eurovision is upon us once again. In anticipation of what is obviously the most important event in the European cultural/political calendar, I'm considering learning some Azeri over the next week.

In terms of materials, I only have 'Parlons Azerbaidjanais' at the moment, so if anyone knows of any more materials, they would be much appreciated!

I'm quite excited, as this will be my first Turkic language and I'll post some updates here, but I don't really expect to learn very much (especially as I have exams next week...) Feel free to join me if you want!

For such a short period, what little that is legally available for Azeri for a non-Russophone would be overkill or take some time arrive from Azerbaijan (e.g. "Elementary Azerbaijani", "Teach Yourself Azeri"). Unzum's site, "Soyouwanttolearnalanguage" has links to some short material for Azeri here including a couple of small primers with audio to get your feet wet in the language.

You may find this blog by an English librarian in Azerbaijani and this one by an Azeri graduate student to be interesting.

Eurovision is very popular in Norway also, although many people look at it in a rather ironic way.

I remember many years ago, each country had to present a song in the language/one of the languages of the country. I liked it much better then, a polyglot treat!

Oh, this year it's very polyglot: Austrian hip-hop duo in Mühlviertlerisch, Finnish singer in Swedish and, of course, Russian old grannies in Udmurt. + the representatives of all of the post-Yugoslavian republics (including Kosovar representative of Albania) in their native languages. Not bad :)
