Hello everyone,
I've been thinking a lot lately about which language I would like to learn next and I think I've decided. English is my
native language and I've gotten a pretty good hold on Spanish, which I love, after studying abroad (I'm actually still
going to be in Spain for another month so I still have time to keep improving). I think I want to go outside of the
Romance language family for my next one and I think I've settled on German.
Before I start, though, I wanted your guys advice. Where would you start? Are podcasts good to listen to or are
traditional textbooks and classes useful? What about pronunciation? Is it important to pick a dialect to focus on early
on? Or is it more important to start with standard German and decide later? Thanks in advance for the input!

As dialects in German are often much more than just a slight accent (at times mutually pretty unintelligible) I'd say you should go for standard.
People in Germany that speak a dialect are also fluent in standard (except for some older people, that will try to talk very slowly and clearly to make you understand them, which obviously won't do any good ...)
And about which learning materials to use I can't help you as a native speaker...
But whatever you choose, I wish you good luck :)

There are awesome podcasts by Deutsche Welle, specifically the "Deutsch? Warum nicht!" course.
Don't worry so much about the materials. If it doesn't work, try something else. (avoid Rosetta Stone and if you want to try something expensive like Pimsleur, try your local library or at least the free sample lessons) The techniques are more important - here's a bunch of good ones http://learnanylanguage.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Techniques
