Wrong: 性 Half-right: 而 Starting character for next time: #36 Well, now I know which one I keep getting wrong all the time: 而. My problem is I keep getting the tone wrong. There are a few different 'er's, and I can't seem to keep straight which tone and meaning belong to which character. Wrong: None! Half-right: 机 Starting character for next time: #111 Hooray! I got 而 right this time! 2nd tone. Hopefully that'll stick from now on, since I spent so long trying to get it. So now, I must remember that 机 "ji" is first tone. Shouldn't be too hard, as long as I remember it's in 飞机 "fēi jī" aeroplane, because I know those tones already. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Hey, nice going! I'll keep an eye on your log, hoping it will make me stay motivated as well. I am just learning my first characters (I can do 4-5 on a good day :-) so it helps to see someone a bit morea advanced in action.

Good for you! No doubt I'll slow down once I started hitting characters that are truly new to me. The good news, though, is that you get faster as you go along; somehow, the characters get easier to remember once you've got a few under your belt. And that goes for looking them up as well. I remember I used to spend, like, 10 minutes trying to look up an unknown character in a radical index. Now it's a matter of seconds. Tens of seconds, often, but seconds nonetheless. ;-) There will be a hiatus in this log, though, so now's as good a time as any to report it. I'll be out of town for the whole of next week, and then home for a few days, and then off again for another two weeks, and I won't be taking my computer along with me, so I won't be using my nifty flashcard program to test/record my progress. What's more, these places probably won't even have internet access, so chances are I won't be writing log entries of any description. I'll have my tablet on me, though, which has a kind of Chinese character flashcard program I downloaded, so at least I can still keep practicing... if, of course, I can stay motivated without this log to bolster me up... :-S 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

天 with two things on top seems to be a better association for me. At least I think there are less hanzi with 天 and two things on top than hanzi looking like a screwed up face with eyes and mouth tightly shut. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Wrong: 战通应果向相什点次头位己被产并制 Half-right: 政已利原及代化 Starting character for next time: #117 So, as you can tell by looking at the lists, got a few more wrong and half-right this time. Many of the half-right ones I got the pronunciation right, but the meaning wrong. I got 己 [jǐ] and 已 [yǐ] confused. (And really, who can blame me?) Apparently the way to describe the difference is that 已 is "closed" on the left side, while 己 is "open" on the left side. Maybe the person who came up with that description has sliding doors in their house that get stuck half-way. I know 已 as 已经的已 [yǐjīng de yǐ] "the 已 from 'already'", but it also apparently means "stop, cease, end", and I can kinda make out a loose semantic link from "closed" to "end" to "already". It's pretty loose, but it should be enough to help me distinguish between 己 and 已. Also, the other thing I noticed was that these characters are both liars. For me, 2nd tone and 3rd tone are the easiest to get mixed up (because they often sound indistinguishable in certain contexts), and both of these characters kind of look like a digital "2", whereas they're both 3rd tone. Some of the other "wrong" ones were also because I confused them with other, similar characters. 向 [xiàng] I thought was 同 [tóng]; 什 [shén] I thought was 件 [jiàn] or 计 [jì]; and 并 [bìng] I got confused with 井 [jǐng] (even though I know that character should not have appeared so near the front of the list). There were other mix-ups too, but I'll leave this entry there, and right about them next time if they happen again. Actually, I think describing exactly what my mistakes were in this log is a great way to make sure I don't make the same mistake next time. Unfortunately, though, this'll be my last log entry for at least a week, as I mentioned above. Hopefully, I'll still keep up a daily habit even without writing this log to look forward to, 'coz I have to say, this method is really working for me. Thanks, HTLAL! I didn't know what 己 could mean but then I reminded myself of 自己. ._.
Why you can't distinguish 并 from 井? The first one clearly got a kwukyel, while the other one not. You're sure you learning in the right manner? You're not just remembering hanzi as pictures, true? You shoulda remembered them as made up of hanzi parts. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
