As I wrote the title to this entry, I wondered how many other French learners on this website had used that as the
title for their first journal entry. It seems fitting enough for me to be willing to sacrifice originality. This journal is documenting the beginning of my journey with French. In reality, my journey with French began months ago, when I saw a good deal on an Assimil course on the internet. I had been interested in French and took this as my opportunity to begin. Assimil didn't end up serving my needs at that time, perhaps because I didn't have the patience for the slow early lessons, but I am sure I will eventually go back to it. Assimil did, however, manage to get me hooked on French. I took the Pimsleur level 1 course out of the library and worked all of the way through it, doing 2 or 3 lessons some days. I had a few breaks from Pimsleur, but I found that I could get right back to where I had left off by simply redoing the last lesson. This brings me to today. I recently finished reading Barry Farber's book, and I am, to some extent, using his methods. I have reached lesson 8 of Pimsleur level 2, and I plan to continue with that, doing 1 or 2 lessons every day. I also found a book titled A Conversational Introduction to French by Heise and Muller, published in 1960 that seems like it will be very helpful. In reality, it is very similar to Assimil without the audio and with more grammar. It starts with a short piece of text in French, and then it explains the grammatical points and contains some exercises. I'm not sure why I like it more than I liked Assimil. I am also planning on starting the FSI phonology course. One of my current problems in French (a common one, I am sure) is that I have trouble determining pronunciation from orthography. I have already managed to learn the more difficult sounds of French, but I am hoping that I can read aloud more accurate or have a more accurate internal voice after the FSI phonology course. I do not know if I will proceed to the FSI Basic course. I think it is more likely that I'll work through Assimil and then try to progress to native materials. I don't need to make these decisions now, though, so we shall see in the future. 1 person has voted this message useful |
